🏆 Dell AX System: The Premier Solution for Azure Local

The Dell AX System is Dell Technologies' Premier Solution for Azure Local — a designation in the Microsoft Azure Local catalog reserved for a small number of strategic partners with the deepest engineering integration into the Microsoft management stack. Not every OEM hardware platform qualifies for Premier Solution status; it requires co-engineering effort between Dell and Microsoft to deliver validated, automated deployment and lifecycle management at a level above standard catalog hardware.

This distinction matters practically: Premier Solutions include Solution Builder Extensions (SBEs) — Dell-maintained firmware, driver, and Windows Defender Application Control (WDAC) policy bundles that are delivered through Azure Update Manager alongside OS updates. This means the entire hardware software stack (OS + firmware + drivers) is updated as a single validated unit, eliminating the most common cause of production cluster failures: an OS patch that breaks a driver or vice versa.

💡

Important clarification: Standard Dell PowerEdge servers are not validated for Azure Local. The AX System product line is a purpose-built, separately validated platform. Deploying Azure Local on non-AX PowerEdge hardware is unsupported and will fail both the environment checker validation and Microsoft support eligibility. Always verify hardware on the Azure Local Solutions Catalog.

🔌 The Current AX System Lineup (2026)

The AX System product family covers a range of form factors and performance profiles, all sharing the same Premier Solution validation status and SBE lifecycle management framework. Based on the official Dell specification sheet (© 2026):

AX-770 — High-Performance 2U (Flagship)

The AX-770 is Dell's newest flagship AX node built on 6th Generation Intel Xeon Scalable (Granite Rapids) processors — the most advanced platform in the AX lineup. It is designed for compute-intensive and AI-ready workloads where maximum core density, GPU capacity, and NVMe throughput are required.

💡

Storage config guidance: For most enterprise VM workloads (general compute, SQL Server, VDI), the All-NVMe AX-760 is the recommended starting point — the performance consistency of direct NVMe without a separate cache tier simplifies capacity planning and delivers predictable IOPS. Hybrid configurations are available for cold/warm data scenarios where raw capacity matters more than peak IOPS.

AX-670 — High-Capacity 1U (Dense NVMe)

The AX-670 packs the same 6th Gen Granite Rapids processor generation as the AX-770 into a 1U chassis, making it ideal for high-density rack environments where U-count is at a premium. It is All-NVMe only, targeting high-throughput storage workloads in compact form factors.

ComponentAX-670 Specification
Form Factor1U Rack
Processors2× 6th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable (Granite Rapids) — up to 86 cores/processor
MemoryUp to 8 TB DDR5 (32× RDIMMs, up to 6400 MT/s)

GPU SupportNVIDIA L4, SW, up to 2
iDRACiDRAC 10 Enterprise/Datacenter

AX-660 — Compact 1U (Cost-Efficient)

The AX-660 is a 1U node based on 4th/5th Gen Xeon Scalable with a 10-drive chassis — the most cost-efficient AX platform for deployments where per-node raw capacity requirements are modest (up to ~154 TB raw per node in All-NVMe config). Well-suited for smaller enterprise clusters, branch offices, and VDI where cost per VM matters more than maximum throughput.

AX-4000 Series — Ruggedized Edge

The AX-4000 family (AX-4510c and AX-4520c sleds) targets deployments in challenging environmental conditions — retail, manufacturing floors, remote sites, and edge locations where standard rack equipment is impractical. The sleds mount into AX-4000r (rackable) or AX-4000z (flexible/stackable) enclosures.

🔁 Solution Builder Extensions (SBE): Unified Lifecycle Management

The SBE is the technical mechanism that makes the Premier Solution designation operationally meaningful. Dell maintains and publishes SBE bundles that contain validated firmware, driver, and WDAC supplemental policy updates for all AX nodes. When Azure Update Manager triggers a solution update, it pulls the SBE alongside the OS update — the entire stack is tested as a unit before release.

PowerShell — Check current SBE version on an AX node
# View installed Solution Builder Extension version
Get-SBEPackageVersion

# Check for available SBE updates via Azure Update Manager
Get-AzureStackHCIUpdate | Where-Object {$_.PackageType -eq "SBE"} |
  Select-Object Version, State, Description | Format-List
⚠️

Never apply firmware manually on AX nodes. Do not use Dell Repository Manager, iDRAC update catalogs, or OMSA to push firmware directly to AX nodes. All firmware must be delivered through the SBE via Azure Update Manager. Manual firmware updates break SBE version tracking and can fail cluster health validation, blocking future updates.

🔗 Dell OpenManage Integration with Windows Admin Center

The Dell OpenManage Integration with Windows Admin Center (OMIMSWAC) v3.3.2+ (AX-760/660) or v3.5+ (AX-770/670) provides the primary hardware management surface for AX clusters. It automates two integrations that would otherwise require manual configuration:

  • HCI Configuration Profile (HCP) → Azure Policy: Dell's validated cluster configuration settings are automatically codified as Azure Policy definitions, ensuring the cluster stays in a compliant configuration over time without manual policy authoring
  • AX node hardware alerts → Azure Monitor: iDRAC hardware health events (drive failures, temperature, PSU status, predictive failures) are surfaced directly in Azure Monitor alert rules, eliminating the need for a separate hardware monitoring tool

📺 PowerFlex Integration (AX-4520c)

The AX-4520c edge node supports integration with Dell PowerFlex software-defined storage, enabling linear scaling of storage resources independently from Azure Local compute and Storage Spaces Direct. This is relevant for deployments where storage growth patterns are unpredictable or where a central shared storage fabric is already in place. The AX-4520c is the only AX node in the current lineup with native PowerFlex connectivity support.

Sizing tool: Use the Azure Local Sizer to model your VM workloads against specific AX Node configurations. For final BOM-level validation with exact part numbers and pricing, engage your Dell account team — EMEA Dell partners have access to the Dell Azure Local Sizer portal which outputs validated configurations directly from the AX catalog.

📞 ProDeploy & ProSupport

All AX System configurations include access to Dell's ProDeploy and ProSupport service offerings. For Azure Local deployments, ProDeploy Plus is strongly recommended — it includes on-site deployment assistance from a Dell engineer who is specifically trained on the AX + Azure Local deployment workflow, including environment checker validation, Arc registration, and the deploymentSettings ARM resource submission.

ProSupport Plus includes Secure Connect Gateway integration for automated case creation on hardware failures — the same phone-home capability available in the previous APEX Cloud Platform model, now included as a standard ProSupport Plus feature rather than requiring a separate consumption agreement.
